AllMusic Review by Blair Sanderson [-]
Continuing its cycle of Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies with modern works that reflect his enduring influence, BR Klassik serves up the Symphony No. 4 in B flat major and the Symphony No. 5 in C minor, with a premiere of a two-movement work by Lithuanian composer Raminta Šerkšnyté, Fires. Performed by stalwarts Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the symphonies are mainstream renditions with few surprises, and the seeker of solid interpretations and skillful playing will find these performances perfectly acceptable. The Šerkšnyté piece, commissioned by Jansons for this series, will be a bit disconcerting for the traditional symphonic fan, though, for its modern style and enigmatic content are rather hard to connect to the epic Romanticism of Beethoven. Apart from the tempo designation, "con brio," and the closing "three shorts and a long" from the Fifth Symphony, there are few obvious clues to show where Šerkšnyté takes off from Beethoven, and the material she borrowed from the Fifth has been almost entirely internalized and reworked into a new but not especially memorable piece.
